How To Rid Your HVAC System Of Odors

Does it smell like you have bad odors coming out of your air registers? If you think that you have an odor problem that is linked into your air duct system, you obviously want to take care of it as soon as possible. Odors can start out mild and then become worse and worse over time. Unfortunately, this often means that the homeowner might take longer to notice the small. You can become used to smell, and not realize how bad it is. Luckily, the solution for an odor that is coming out of the air ducts is usually easy to take care of.

There are three simple steps you should follow if you are trying to get rid of odors within your HVAC system.

1. Remove Your Air Registers and Look for Carcasses

First of all, you should remove all of your air registers and examine your ducts. This step requires you to look around and search for the cause of your odor. The first thing you should do is look for any possible animal carcasses within your duct system. It is not uncommon for small rodents, birds, and other tiny animals to get stuck within air ducts and die. Even though this might seem like a rare problem, it is something that is surprisingly common and can result in very bad odors.

2. Clean Your Ducts

If there is nothing as dramatic as a dead animal carcass within your duct system, you should search for any dark mold buildup on the walls. This can be another cause of severe odors. If you do have this problem, you will need to clean your duct walls with an antibacterial cleaning solution. Of course, duct cleaning can be difficult work that requires special tools. Importantly, you need a telescoping pole and a duct cleaning brush. If you don't want to bother doing the work yourself, you should just pay for a professional service.

3. Maintain the Air Filters

Improperly maintained and replaced air filters are another possible causes of odors. This is usually the result of air filters that are not changed often. Most air filters only have a 3 to 6 month lifespan. However, some homeowners don't even replace the filters once a year. If it has been several years since you changed your filters, you need to install a new filter and clean your filter compartment. The filter compartment gets dirty, especially if the filters are not changed as often as suggested. Also, if your filter compartment is not regularly cleaned, then your new filter is going to get dirty more quickly. Usually, the solution to odors within your HVAC system are easy to find and fix.
